Silicone-based lubricants have a devoted following among people who find water-based formulas dry out too quickly. Silicone doesn't absorb into skin or evaporate, so a small amount lasts significantly longer — making it particularly popular for anal play, where reapplication can interrupt the experience.
The critical limitation is compatibility with silicone toys. Silicone lubricant can degrade the surface of silicone toys over time, causing them to become sticky, porous, and harder to clean. The rule is simple: never use silicone lube with silicone toys. Use water-based lubricant with silicone toys, and reserve silicone lube for glass, stainless steel, ABS plastic, or skin-to-skin use.
Silicone lube is also not recommended for use with latex condoms, as it can degrade the latex and compromise the condom's effectiveness. Polyurethane and polyisoprene condoms are compatible with silicone lubricants, but always check the condom packaging to confirm.
For shower or bath use, silicone lubricant is the clear winner. Water-based formulas wash away immediately, while silicone maintains its slipperiness even when submerged. Überlube is a popular Canadian-available option that is fragrance-free, paraben-free, and works equally well as a skin conditioner.
Cleanup requires soap and water rather than just water alone — silicone doesn't rinse off with water the way water-based formulas do. This is a minor inconvenience for most people, but worth knowing before you use it on fabric surfaces or in situations where a quick cleanup is important.
